Legislation Would Hurt Tobacco Profits by About 5 Percent, Goldman Sachs Analyst Says
NEW YORK (AP) -- A proposed tax increase on cigarettes could hurt tobacco companies' profits by an average of 5 percent if enacted, a Goldman Sachs analyst estimated over the weekend.
On Friday, the U.S. senate passed by a vote of 59-40 a proposed amendment to the 2008 budget. The amendment, sponsored by Sen. Gordon H. Smith of Oregon, would raise taxes on cigarettes by 61 cents per pack. The tax revenue would finance the State Children's Health Insurance Program.

Light cigarettes again
June 29, 2006 Smoking "light" cigarettes was just another way Mim Long rationalized that she was not addicted to smoking, along with an arbitrary rule of not smoking before 10 a.m. But, alas, the Los Angeles actress now admits light cigarettes are just as addictive as their stronger counterparts.

House Debates Cigarette Tax
The cost of smoking cigarettes in iowa could be going up very soon. The iowa house is debating the cigarette tax bill today. The senate has already approved the measure, which calls for raising the tax by a $1.00 a pack. If approved, the higher tax, for a total of $1.36 on cigarettes and other tobacco products, would take effect when gpvernor culver signs it.
